The story of the Ruffner family is the American story. In 1734, Swiss immigrants Peter Ruffner and his sister Mary arrived in the American colonies in search of a new life free from religious persecution. They settled in Pennsylvania, where Peter soon met his wife. Together, they laid the foundations of a family line that would stretch across centuries and help shape the American frontier.
The Ruffner family homestead, known as Big Spring, still stands as a symbol of those early beginnings. Built by Peter and Mary in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, this historic home—marked by a roadside billboard near Luray—became the heart of Ruffner heritage. Nearby, the family cemetery holds generations of Ruffner’s, connecting us to the people and stories that came before.
